Discord Scams: Have You Been Targeted?

Unfortunately, a surge in Discord scams has accompanied the rise in popularity of platforms like Discord. As users come together for community interaction, gaming, and other shared interests, some malicious actors exploit this space to target the unsuspecting. This guide delves into the world of these scams.

At its core, Discord is a communication platform designed for real-time chatting. It offers a blend of text channels, voice chat rooms, and video conferencing capabilities, making it a versatile tool for various users.

Originally conceived as a haven for gamers to discuss their favorite games and coordinate in-game strategies, Discord has evolved exponentially since its inception. Its simple interface, combined with the flexibility to create and customize servers, has led to its adoption far beyond just the gaming realm.

Today, professionals harness it for business discussions, students create study groups, hobbyists form communities around shared interests, and many more diverse groups utilize its features for community building and networking.

However, with immense popularity comes inevitable pitfalls. Discord’s user base has expanded, as has its attention garnered from less scrupulous individuals and groups. The platform’s vast and varied user base has made it a prime target for scammers looking to exploit unsuspecting users. These malicious actors employ various tactics to deceive, from phishing attempts to fake giveaways, capitalizing on the platform’s trusting communal nature.

Unfortunately, the ease of creating servers and bots has made it too simple for scammers to proliferate their schemes. As with any widely used platform, its rapid growth and the opportunities it presents have drawn in both those looking for genuine connection and those with darker intentions.

Types of Discord Scams

As Discord’s reach has expanded, the platform has unfortunately become a fertile ground for various scams.

Awareness is the first step in defense, so here’s a breakdown of the most prevalent types:

  1. Fake Bots and Servers: Among the most common scams, malicious actors create bots and servers that mimic legitimate ones. They often promise rewards, unique game mods, or special privileges to lure users. Once engaged, these bots or servers may solicit personal information, deploy malware, or entrap users in other deceptive practices.
  2. Direct Message Phishing: This scam takes a more direct approach. Users receive unsolicited messages with enticing offers or urgent requests, often accompanied by links. These links typically lead to phishing sites that harvest login credentials or other sensitive information. The rule of thumb? Be wary of unexpected direct links, no matter how tempting the offer.
  3. Fake Giveaways: Who doesn’t love free stuff? Scammers capitalize on this sentiment by announcing fake giveaways. The catch? To claim your ‘prize,’ you might be asked to pay a small advance fee or provide personal details. When you realize there is no reward, the scammer is long gone with your money or data.
  4. Impersonation Scams: Trust is a valuable currency, and scammers know it. By impersonating known community members, server moderators, or even game developers, they attempt to gain users’ trust. Once they’ve established this rapport, they’ll often make a request or offer that takes advantage of this falsely earned trust.
  5. Nitro Scams: Discord Nitro, the platform’s premium subscription service, is another bait scammers use. Offers of free Nitro memberships can be enticing, but these are often ploys to steal personal or financial details.

In the digital age, staying informed about these tactics is crucial. Always approach unexpected offers or requests on Discord with a healthy dose of skepticism.

What to Do if You’ve Been Scammed on Discord

Realizing you’ve fallen victim to a scam can be a distressing experience, especially on a platform you trust, like Discord. However, acting promptly and strategically is essential to mitigate potential damages. Here’s a step-by-step guide on what to do if you find yourself trapped by a scammer on Discord:

  1. Immediate Action: Firstly, prioritize your online security. Change your Discord password immediately, and consider updating passwords for other linked accounts as a precaution. Activate two-factor authentication on Discord and any other platforms you use, adding an extra layer of security. Scrutinize your account for suspicious or unauthorized activities, especially if you’ve clicked links or downloaded files.
  2. Reporting: Bring the scam to the attention of Discord’s Trust & Safety team. They’re equipped to handle such issues and can take necessary actions against the culprits. Furthermore, reporting the incident to local law enforcement or specialized cybercrime units is advisable if the scam involves monetary theft or severe data breaches.
  3. Financial Safety: If the scam compromised any financial details, act immediately. Contact your bank or credit card provider to inform them of the potential security breach. They can guide you on the next steps, which might include freezing accounts or monitoring for unauthorized transactions.
  4. Awareness: Prevention is often the best cure. Please share your experience discreetly with friends, server members, and the broader community so they know about the scam. Your story might help someone else avoid a similar pitfall.
  5. Educate Yourself: Knowledge is your ally. Invest time familiarizing yourself with prevalent scam techniques on Discord and other platforms. Being able to recognize red flags can significantly reduce the chances of falling for scams in the future.

Remember, scams prey on trust and haste. Always take a moment to evaluate unexpected offers or requests, and trust your instincts. If something feels off, it probably is.

Complaints We Received

Recently, one of our partners received the following complaint from a person who was scammed for over $2.6K:

I guess you could say it started a few months ago. I was approached on a Discord server, specifically a popular one named “Fixitfixitfixit,” with a “free crypto” giveaway. It didn’t immediately seem like a scam to me, but I was hesitant to claim the 3.25 ETH that I had supposedly won. I know quite a few people on that server and in real life who have been using the “jest-coin” site, which the giveaway directed me to. It’s a well-set-up site, and if it is a scam, they’ve done a convincing job.

Before I could withdraw ‘my ETH’, I had to deposit 0.01 BTC. They didn’t provide clear information about why the deposit was necessary for verification on their site. I made a few errors and found myself out about $1300. The platform also began to double input some of my choices, and now I’ve lost $2688.34 from depositing into it. It started to make sense that something was amiss. I know people who use the jest-coin site perfectly fine without any problems, even after going through the verification steps.

Feeling perplexed, I asked a friend with a significantly larger wallet on the site (compared to mine). He suggested I continue, implying that soon I’d reach a more advantageous point like he had, especially regarding external wallets. However, more and more red flags started appearing, and I grew fearful of losing more of my hard-earned money. I haven’t interacted with the site for around a week and a half as of writing this. Now, I’m out $2688.34 plus additional transaction fees. At this point, I just want my money back and to invest it elsewhere. From what I’ve observed, it’s too volatile for my liking right now.

On September 24, 2023, we received the following complaint from a person who was scammed for $25:

Discord Scams – Conclusion

In our digital age, where platforms like Discord offer unparalleled opportunities for communication and community-building, the dual-edged sword of technology becomes evident. With the immense benefits come risks, making vigilance commendable and essential. Every click, every shared detail, and every new online interaction requires a discerning eye. Scams, unfortunately, have evolved with technology, becoming more sophisticated and challenging to spot.

The responsibility for online safety doesn’t rest solely on the user’s shoulders. While individual vigilance is crucial, platforms like Discord must safeguard their users proactively. Incorporating robust security measures, prompt responses to reported threats, and educating users about potential risks are imperative for these platforms. It’s a collaborative effort where platforms set the stage for safety, and users enact best practices.

However, the digital landscape is ever-evolving. Scammers constantly devise new tactics, capitalizing on current trends, software vulnerabilities, or human psychology. Staying updated on these tactics is akin to an arms race against potential threats. Subscribing to cybersecurity news, participating in online safety webinars, or even being part of communities that share such information can be invaluable.

I was scammed by a website I followed a link on facebook too. Summer-clearance.com. I should have known it was too good to be true. Great prices… I placed an order around the end of August 2023. I sent an email asking where my items were about the second week of September. I received an email September twenty fifth 2023 saying my order was delivered. I never received anything. I sent them an email and told them that. They said to give them a couple days and check with my neighbors. I did so and when I try to reply now the email comes back as undelivable. I looked them up and realized I have been scammed. You can’t even log into their website anymore.

      Dear Lori,

I’m truly sorry to hear about your experience. Being scammed can be distressing, both financially and emotionally. Here are a few steps you can take in light of this situation:

      1. Document Everything: Keep all the emails, transaction records, and any other communication you’ve had with the website. This documentation could be essential if you decide to pursue legal action or if you want to report the scam.

      2. Contact Your Bank or Credit Card Company: If you made the payment using a credit card or bank transfer, contact your bank or card provider immediately. They might be able to reverse the transaction or provide guidance on what steps to take next.

      3. Change Passwords: If you created an account on the scam website, it’s a good idea to change passwords for any other accounts where you might have used the same or a similar password.

      4. Report the Scam:
      – Local Authorities: Depending on your jurisdiction, consider reporting the scam to your local or national law enforcement agency. They might already be aware of the scam, or your report could help protect others.
      – Online Platforms: Since you mentioned you found the link on Facebook, report the scam to Facebook. They have mechanisms in place to handle such reports and might take down fraudulent links.
      – Consumer Protection Agencies: In the US, you can report online scams to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) using their online complaint assistant.

      5. Stay Informed: It’s essential to remain cautious and informed about online scams. Many scammers operate multiple fraudulent sites and may reappear under different names.

      6. Seek Professional Guidance: If your loss was significant, you might want to consider seeking guidance from a professional, such as CNC Intelligence, which specializes in assisting law enforcement and law firms in asset recovery cases. While they don’t directly recover funds, they can help provide necessary evidence and information to facilitate any legal proceedings you might want to initiate.

Remember, scams can happen to anyone. It’s essential to learn from the experience, stay vigilant, and take steps to protect yourself in the future.
